Trustees
Commanding Officer, Special Air Service Regiment
The Commanding Officer, Special Air Service Regiment automatically becomes a Trustee of the SAS Resources Trust during his 2 year term at Campbell Barracks.
Mrs Maree Alver
Maree has been involved with the SAS Resources Trust since its inception as the Financial Adviser and was later appointed as a Trustee in May 2007. Her experience includes involvement in government boards serving as Chairman and as a board member, as well as undertaking voluntary activities with a number of charitable organizations.
Maree is employed by Morgan Stanley Smith Barney and has over 20 years experience in the financial services industry. Her qualifications include a Bachelor of Education (Economics), Certificate in Financial Markets, a Masters in Business Administration and she is also a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Her personal interest in the Trust develops from over thirty years experience as the wife of a serving member of the SAS Regiment and Special Forces.
Mr Andrew J Forrest
Mr Andrew Forrest was appointed to the Board of Trustees on 26th July 2011 to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Mr Malcolm McCusker AO QC.
Andrew is a well known industry and philanthropic leader, the founder and Chairman of the Fortescue Metals Group and the Australian Children’s Trust among other charities and companies.
Educated at Hale School and the University of Western Australia (double major in Economics and Politics), Andrew comes from a well known Western Australian family. He has been awarded the Australian Centenary Medal, the Australia Sports Medal, the Australian Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award and West Australian Citizen of the Year for his contribution to regional development. Known widely as a family orientated and a strong community supporter, he and his wife Nicola are major sponsors of the Arts and active in under privileged children ventures.
Andrew brings many fine qualities to our Board and we are fortunate to have someone with Andrew’s skills and humanitarian ideals available to assist our Board and the SAS Regimental family.
Mr Jonathon W Horton BEc (UWA) BCom (UWA)
With a career spanning the United States of America and Australia and roles with international investment banking firms, Managing Partner of NWQ Capital Management (NWQ), Jonathon Horton has more than two decades experience in the fields of asset management, portfolio construction, derivative and cash markets trading and credit and risk analysis.
Jonathon is currently the President of the Alice O Liechti Educational Foundation based in the US. He is currently the Archbishop’s appointee of the Council of Christ Church Grammar School. Jonathon has been involved in a number of charitable causes over the years serving in a variety of roles including advisor, asset manager and fiduciary of various philanthropic entities.
Jonathon spent 15 years in San Francisco, where he worked for leading Wall Street firms before establishing his own asset management firm which he sold in 2006. Jonathon has developed considerable expertise in capital markets and now specializes in alternative investments, principally hedge funds.
Jonathon joined the Board of SAS Resources Trust in November 2005.
Mr Malcolm McCusker AO QC
Mr Malcolm McCusker is a barrister who was educated at Perth Modern School and the University of WA Law School. He was admitted to practice in 1961 and has appeared as counsel in the Supreme Court, Federal Court, High Court and Privy Counsel. He has acted pro bono in a number of cases including a successful appeal for Andrew Mallard, wrongly convicted of murder. In 2007 the Australian Lawyers’ Alliance awarded him the Civil Justice Award. He was the Special Inspector investigating the Rothwells Bank Collapse in 1989-90 and was the inaugural Parliamentary Inspector of the Corruption and Crime Commission (2004-08). Malcolm has been Chairman of the Legal Aid Commission of WA for 27 years and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the WA Constitutional Centre since its inception in 1997. He supports and is Patron of the McCusker Alzheimer’s Research Foundation and is involved in a range of humanitarian interests whilst continuing to practice as a barrister. In 2005 he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) and made “WA Citizen of the Year (Professions)”. In 2008 he was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws by the University of Western Australia and in 2009 an Honorary Doctorate of Edith Cowan University. In 2010 he was made “WA Citizen of the Year for Community Service and Philanthropy”.
Mr Malcolm McCusker AO QC has been a Trustee of SAS Resources Trust since 1996.
Mr James McMahon DSC DSM
Mr James McMahon is currently the Chief Operating Officer at Azure Capital, a Corporate Advisory Firm.
James has served in the Australian Defence Force for over 24 years. At the operational level, the majority of James’ service was with the Australian Special Air Service (SAS) Regiment where he was the Commanding Officer. At the strategic level the majority of his service was in Capability Management and Human Resources.
James is a Graduate of the Australian Defence College and holds a Graduate Diploma in Management, a Masters in Management and a Masters in Business Administration. He was appointed as a Non-Executive Director to the Board of the West Coast Eagles Football Club in 2007 and as a Trustee of the SAS Resources Trust in April 2009. James is also a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
James has been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) and Distinguished Service Medal (DSM) for his command in Timor Leste, Afghanistan and Iraq.
Mr Paul Murray
Paul Murray was educated at Guildford Grammar School. Paul is a leading Perth journalist who was the former Editor of the “West Australian” newspaper who was later retained to write opinion articles for the same newspaper.
On leaving the “West” Paul acted as a morning presenter for 6 years on a Perth commercial radio station, 6PR. He occasionally acts as a “guest” presenter on the ABC 720 Morning Show.
Paul Murray joined the Board of the SAS Resources Trust in 2002.
Dr Mark Nidorf M.D M.B.B.S F.R.A.C.P. F.A.C.C. F.C.S.A.N.Z.
Mark Nidorf trained in Medicine in Western Australia, completing his studies in 1980. In 1987 he became a Cardiology Research Fellow at St Charles Gairdner Hospital and completed his MDthesis in 1990.
In the early 90s he worked in the Cardiac unit at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston USA and was an instructor in Medicine in the Harvard Medical School.
Mark’s special interests include acute coronary syndromes, valvular heart disease and echocardiography.
Mark Nidorf joined the Board of the SAS Resources Trust in 2009 bringing a great deal of medical skills and knowledge to the Board Table.
Commodore David Orr (Ret’d)
David Orr has enjoyed a distinguished career in the Royal Australian Navy finishing his career as Naval Officer Commanding, Western Australia.
David was educated at Hale School and joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1952. In 1953 he was awarded his Wings. David was then posted to various Commands both within the RAN and the Royal Navy.
David was promoted to the Rank of Commodore in 1967. David was posted to HMAS Stirling as Naval Officer Commanding Western Australia in 1982 and retired from the RAN in 1985.
Commodore Orr (Ret’d) served as a Commissioner with the Anti-Corruption Commission from 1996 to 1999.
David has held many Patronages of Service Organisations including the Royal Marines, RAN Corvette Association and is the Co-Patron of the Royal Naval Association. David is a former Commodore of the Fremantle Sailing Club and is the current Patron of the South of Perth Yacht Club.
David Orr has been a Trustee of the SAS Resources Trust since 1996.
Mr Gregory Solomon LL.B (Trust Solicitor)
Mr Greg Solomon, through his firm Solomon Brothers (of which he is Managing Partner) has been the Trust Solicitor since June 1996.
Greg has practiced as a commercial/corporate lawyer in Western Australia for more than 27 years. Mr Solomon has a very broad range of experience in mining, technology, corporate, commercial, finance and property law.
Greg is currently the Executive Chairman of Tasman Resources Ltd and Eden Energy.
Mr Kerry Stokes AC
Kerry Stokes’ Chairmanship of Seven Group caps four decades of his active involvement in the ownership and management of media companies in Australia.
Mr. Stokes is the recipient of one of the country’s highest honours, the Order of Australia, and more recently was awarded in 2008 the highest honour in the country, as a Companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia. In 2009, he was recognised with the prestigious Richard Pratt Business Arts Leadership Award by the Australian Business Arts Foundation – for his leadership and contribution in Australia’s cultural and arts landscape. He is a former chairman of the National Gallery of Australia.
Mr. Stokes is recognised as an honorary fellow of Murdoch University and has been awarded an honorary doctorate of Commerce from Edith Cowan University. Mr. Stokes has also been recognised by the Australian Institute of Company Directors for his contribution to economic progress and corporate governance, and his contributions to the community and efforts in not-for-profit organizations. Mr Stokes was awarded the Rotary Paul Harris Fellow Award by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International in 1994 and holds a Life Membership of the Returned Services League of Australia. Mr Stokes is also a Council Member of the Australian War Memorial, as well as an international member for the Paley Centre for Media (formerly the Museum of Radio & Television New York), a life member of Variety Australia, and a Member for the International Council of the Louvre, Paris.
Through his private company, Australian Capital Equity, Mr. Stokes has broad interests in property, construction, mining, oil and gas exploration.Mr. Stokes also has a deep interest in art. He was a director of the Western Australian Gallery and chairman of the Western Australian Art Gallery Foundation from 1989 to 1991. Mr. Stokes continues as a member of the Art Gallery Foundation.
Mr Tom Wallace OAM F.C.A. (Trust Treasurer)
Tom was born in Scotland and qualified as a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland in 1964. Tom worked with an international firm of Accountants in London for 4 years. In 1968 Tom emigrated to Australia.
In 1969 Tom became a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia in 1969. Tom was a Partner in the then firm of Grant Thornton (previously Hendry Rae & Court) for 29 years. Tom’s main areas of responsibility were audit, due diligence, business valuations and general business directory.
Tom retired as a Partner in 2000 and since then has done some business consultancy on a part time basis.
Tom is the Company Secretary of Future Directions International Pty Ltd and Committee Member Commercial Travelers Association of WA.
Tom has been a Trustee and Trust Treasurer of the SAS Resources Trust since its inception in 1996.
Dr Grant Walsh CSM
Grant served with the Australian Defence Force for 29 years having graduated as a Commissioned Officer from the Royal Military College Duntroon in 1983.
He was selected for the Australian Special Air Service (SAS) Regiment in 1988 and spent the following years in a range of command and staff appointments in SASR and the broader Australian Special Forces. These appointments included command at operational levels as well as a number of appointments as the Regimental Executive Officer. Grant was awarded the Conspicuous Service Medal for his services to the Australian Special Forces.
Grant currently consults business and communities on personal, community and organizational capacity building and natural resource management.
Grant is a Graduate of the Universities of NSW and WA as well as Australian Army Command and Staff College. He holds a Bachelor and Graduate Diploma in Science, Graduate Diploma in Management and a PhD in Natural Resource Management.
He was appointed as a Trustee to the Board of the SAS Resources Trust in 2009.
