
Australia’s Special Air Service Regiment has a unique and hazardous role within the Australian Defence Force. Tasks undertaken are frequently beyond the range and capability of conventional forces and usually have strategic consequences at the national level. Additionally other specialised elements of the Australian defence Force, such as submarines and air assets support SAS operations and training on a regular basis.
The Special Air Service Regiment is regarded as one of the world’s finest combat units, having served
with distinction in operational theatres such as Vietnam, Malaysia, the Middle East, East Timor,
Afghanistan and more recently Iraq. As well the SAS can be involved in peace-keeping roles at trouble
spots around the world.
The SAS Regiment has a proud tradition working in non-military areas such as counter-terrorism, assisting civilian police, survival training and coastal surveillance as well as community based work. In 2000 the SAS Regiment played a vital role in guaranteeing Sydney held the most successful Olympics ever is further evidence of Australia’s need to increase its appreciation and awareness of our Special Forces.
